What is clitoral hood reduction?

Clitoral hood reduction is a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue from the sides of the clitoris, a sensitive, external part of the female genitals.

This type of surgery is not a clitoral mutilation or unhooding procedure. Clitoral hood reduction is meant to enhance sexual stimulation and can also improve the appearance of a clitoris that’s enlarged or uneven.

When should I consider a clitoral hood reduction?

You might consider clitoral hood reduction surgery if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your genitals because of excessive skin or reduced clitoral sensations during sex.

Some women may also have irritation or pain because of a large clitoral hood that rubs against clothing.

Female Health Associates of North Texas offers comprehensive health evaluations to determine if you’re a candidate for clitoral hood reduction surgery. Dr. Hantes physically examines your genitals and reviews your medical history to ensure you can tolerate the procedure.

In some cases, Dr. Hantes can complete a clitoral hood reduction during a labiaplasty, a vaginal reconstructive surgery to remove excess tissue from the labia minora, the small lips of the interior vagina, or the labia majora, the larger, outer vaginal lips.

What is involved in clitoral hood reduction surgery?

Female Health Associates of North Texas offers clitoral hood reduction surgery as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Hantes administers anesthesia during the procedure to keep you calm and pain-free.

Using precise surgical techniques, Dr. Hantes removes excess tissue around the clitoris, taking special care not to damage surrounding nerves. He closes the remaining tissue with dissolvable sutures. Surgery typically takes about 30 minutes.

After your procedure is complete, you may have some discomfort or swelling. You should plan to take at least a week off from work and physical activity to allow the tissues time to heal. Dr. Hantes checks the surgical site during a follow-up visit to monitor your healing process and reduce your risk for complications.

Tissue swelling can last six weeks or longer, but as it goes away, you should notice an improvement in the appearance of your vagina.
