All About Clitoral Hood Reduction

Did you know your clitoris has about 10,000 nerve endings and that it’s the only organ in your body that has the  sole purpose of providing sexual pleasure? That means your clitoris is a pretty important part of your body and your sexual satisfaction.

The clitoral hood is a hood or flap of skin that protects the clitoris to make sure it doesn’t get irritated. As with all parts of our body, a clitoral hood comes in different sizes and shapes. For some women, their clitoral hood has excess skin that can reduce sexual stimulation and pleasure or rub against their clothing and cause irritation. Some women may feel shame, embarrassment, or low self-esteem at the appearance of a large clitoral hood.

At Female Health Associates of North Texas, located in Fort Worth, Texas, board-certified urogynecologist Dr. Jeffrey Hantes performs clitoral hood reduction procedures that can help improve your sex life and sexual confidence.

What is a clitoral hood reduction?

A clitoral hood reduction is a surgical procedure where a trained urogynecologist or plastic surgeon removes the excess skin. At Female Health Associates of North Texas, Dr. Hantes performs this procedure on an outpatient basis, meaning you’ll go home on the same day as the surgery. During this 60-minute procedure, he takes great care to remove the excess skin from the sides of the clitoris, careful not to engage with sensitive nerves adjacent to your clitoral hood.

Often, this procedure is done along with a labiaplasty, a cosmetic surgery where he removes excess tissue from the labia minora, or small lips of the interior vagina, or the labia majora, the larger, outer vaginal lips.

When Dr. Hantes has completed the removal of excess tissue, he closes the remaining tissue with dissolvable sutures.

Who’s a good candidate for clitoral hood reduction surgery?

If you feel irritation or rubbing against your clothing in your genital region or have trouble reaching orgasm, you may be a candidate for a clitoral hood reduction. Additionally, if you’re troubled or embarrassed by your appearance when you’re naked, a clitoral hood reduction may be right for you.

During an appointment with Dr. Hantes, he conducts a thorough evaluation where he examines your pelvic regions and genitals and learns your health history to recommend whether you’re a candidate or not. He may also recommend labiaplasty.

What happens after a clitoral hood reduction?

After the surgery, you may be sore and swollen. You’ll be advised to take about a week off to relax and avoid physical activities while you recover. Even after your week off, the swelling will last for several weeks. As the swelling subsides, you’ll see and feel the results of your surgery.
