Labiaplasty vs. Vaginoplasty: What You Need to Know

Vaginal restoration procedures like labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are gaining in popularity. A recent report showed a 50% increase in procedures in the United States in five years. One of the reasons for this increase is the willingness of women to discuss once-taboo subjects such as incontinence, vaginal appearance, sexual pleasure, and vaginal pain or discomfort.

At Female Health Associates of North Texas, located in Fort Worth, Texas, board-certified urogynecologist Dr. Jeffrey Hantes offers vaginal restoration procedures such as labiaplasty and vaginoplasty to address both aesthetic and health concerns. Known for his compassion and expertise, Dr. Hantes can help you determine if a procedure can help and which one is right for you.

What is vaginoplasty?

A baby brings many changes to your life. Your sleep schedule is off. Your free time and energy are limited. Your body isn’t the same. One of the changes to your body can include loose vaginal walls as a result of childbirth. Or, your vaginal walls may become loose as you get older. Age also brings a lot of changes to your body and life.

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps tighten your vaginal walls. During the procedure, Dr. Hantes removes excess vaginal lining and tightens the surrounding soft tissues and muscles. The results can include enhanced sexual pleasure, confidence, and self-esteem.

What is labiaplasty?

Your labia minora and labia majora are the inner and outer folds of skin, also called lips, that protect your vulva or external female genitalia. For some women, an oversized labia minora can cause discomfort. Excess skin can get caught in zippers or pinched when wearing tight clothing.

Additionally, some women are embarrassed by the appearance of their labia minora (inner lips) that might be larger than their labia majora (outer lips).  In other cases, the labia majora may cause problems.

During a labiaplasty, Dr. Hantes removes excessive or uneven skin from the vagina. A labiaplasty can help prevent discomfort and also even out your vaginal lips to make them more aesthetically pleasing.

Which procedure should I get?

If you’re unhappy or uncomfortable with the appearance or functionality of any part of your vagina, a vaginal restoration procedure can help.

During a consultation to discuss your options, Dr. Hantes performs a physical exam and reviews your medical history. Afterward, Dr. Hantes can determine if you’re a candidate for a vaginal restoration procedure and which procedure is right for you. In some cases, women get both at the same time.
